Royal Yachting Association

While Ian Williams started sailing at a young age, he pursued a career in law.

Williams early sailing career saw him dominate domestic match racing. He started racing in the International Cadet Class and at sixteen was selected to represent the UK at the world championships in Belgium.  The next year he won his first Youth Match Racing National Championship and has since become one of the most recognizable names in professional sailing.

Williams is a 3-time nominee for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award, and also a 3-time nominee for the UK’s YJA Yachtsman of the Year award.

As of the end of the 2018 World Match Racing Tour season, Williams is a 17 times winner of events on the World Match Racing Tour and has had 48 podium finishes.

Williams' ambition is to one day win the America’s Cup and bring it back to British waters.

Williams has a formidable Congressional Cup record, finishing on the podium 7 times with back-to-back wins in 2011 and 2012, and again in 2017, earning him his three Crimson Blazers.  Looking to add to his impressive record, he is back in long Beach in 2019 fighting hard and smart to win his 4th Congressional Cup.
